Alma Mater
Reflections by Bella Aman Jajalla
Quezon Provincial High School, (as how us '73s would always
remember) its
once modest look could only convey an exclusive school outside the city,
nothing less, with its wide fenced evergreen grounds and trees. Once known
to the province being public yet compared to other academic institutions was
advanced due to the enormous amount of bright modest students attending this
establishment. The institution was faced with so much challenge however,
won most competitions even at national level.
Parents were comfortable about their students' performance and morale
particularly the city's population was not yet overwhelming. This beloved
school was where youth from all aspects of life spent maybe many of the
happiest moments of their young lives, where goals were affirmed and shaped
while kinship developed and to many a lifetime of significant friendship
with colleagues. Most of us accepted it was the end of our youth for
nothing else could match the overwhelming gaiety experienced.
Not realizing the Annex building had burned down, a good idea evolved to
have a new building for our dear Alma Mater in which a known batchmate
Celso Mendoza had offered to look after the structure and in communication
With Quezon High and other grads back to the last living generation, we
would be able to give something back as an appreciation wherein some could
donate labor , materials, money or anything possibly needed.
But passing by Quezon High and trying to put oneself in retreat was
difficult, for our dearest high school had really metamorphosed almost to
the point the young sanctuary one thought was impossible. Auspiciously,
with the frontage of the main building rectified, it looked classier.
Noticing the added buildings where the plots used to be was a mind changing
factor covering the demure look of the school we spent "happy days"
together. Absolutely, our dear high school had transformed in order to
facilitate other generations of students now reaching 11,000, being their
turn to enjoy the portals we once relished in and indebted to. Yes, it may
be too crowded but still could be one of the most popular high schools there
is considering it has all facilities including a swimming pool and a
humungous grandstand with its oval and a gymnasium renovated to withstand
all the ongoing changes. Old facilities were rectified with new ones.
Other than that the high school heart in each of us would throb within
minutes of entering our Alma Mater.
Most of us may be residing in places away from the city, hence, those
nostalgic moments did not creep over us until now being reminded it had been
25 years since we were immenseful of the joys of our adolescent years. Mixed
feelings of nostalgia and sadness makes you wonder!
